Deerwood School is proud to present these amazing musical compositions that are a small selection of the many fine student-generated melodies crafted in late-May and June of 2019.
As a culmination to the 2018/19 school year in music class, students in Grades 2-5 were given the opportunity to create their own musical compositions using elements of rhythm and melody that they had learned in the current year and in years previous. In accordance with the "Kindergarten to Grade 8 Music: Manitoba Curriculum of Outcomes", these student compositions have demonstrated a thorough knowledge of rhythm, tonal relationships, the G-Pentatonic Scale and melodic design. Upon completion, Deerwood School invited Manitoba composer and local Thompson composer Michelle Pegus to record these select student works in their original form and orchestrate them to highlight the sparkling musicality that lies within each of these songs. The accompanying visual presentation of each student's original melody is the actual presentation of the student work. These have not been previously edited in any way.
Deerwood school believes in the importance of music literacy as a means to compose music (music improvisation being the other) to express one's own musical creativity. Just as society values the composition of stories, poems, painting and all other forms of literary, visual and performing arts, we believe that young people should also be provided opportunities to learn and to succeed in their learning of how to share their own unique thoughts through music.
Deerwood School gratefully acknowledges the musical talent of Manitoba composer Michelle Pegus in the orchestration of our students' works and Mrs. Sarah Schroeder for her technical assistance in uploading our students' works onto our school website.
We hope that you will enjoy this musical presentation!
